The article indicates that the study of youth slang is extremely relevant in modern linguistics, because youth slang is a very variable subsystem of language, characterized by openness, non-normative character of the dictionary, as well as a peculiar indicator of the level of intellectual
development, interests and values.

It is reported that slang units for the designation of speech have a high degree of frequency in Ukrainian mass media. They function in publications
devoted to politics, economics, criminal topics, elections. Journalists, without changing the semantic meaning, use slang units of the thematic group «Speech» to reproduce the color of the youth environment, to describe the realities of today’s youth and the younger generation. The designated thematic group is described as a component of youth slang and ways of its functioning in the structure of linguistic reality. The main reasons for the use of slang on the pages of Ukrainian mass media have been clarified, as well as the fact that slangisms of the Broadcasting thematic group are most often expressions of informativeness, nominativeness in publications, and with their help there is an expressionization that characterizes different forms of speech of the young generation.

The actual material deals with the problems of semantics and expressiveness of slang vocabulary; theoretical bases of the study of slang units related to expressiveness, emotionality, evaluation are substantiated; the role of connotative, denotative and figurative macro components in the formation of expressive plans of slang units has been clarified.

According to the results of the study, it is concluded that the vast majority of slang units are often used in socio-political publications. In addition, slang meets the needs of the modern press for expressing and evaluating events and phenomena, as it is a means of attracting the attention of young people and adolescents. Journalists actively and often inappropriately use slang, trying to make contact with young readers.
