THE ESSENCE OF THE CONCEPTS «STRATEGY», «TACTIC» AND «MOVE» FOR STUDYING PRESIDENTIAL DISCOURSE IN THE CONTEXT OF EXPERIMENTAL PHONETICS

Abstract

The article offers an answer to the widely discussed phenomenon of strategy and its components. In this light, the main directions pursued in the article are, on the one hand, exploring and explaining what the essence of the concept «strategy» is, and, on the other, fi nding an algorithm of how its components are shaped in various forms of political communication in general and presidential speeches in particular. The concept «strategy», as a key component of discourse, is an aid in the realization of the speaker’s intentions, mostly assisted by subordinate units of a lower order. A systematic review of data on this category allows formulating it as an integrated system, model or plan, an overall matrix of communicative behavior within which an optimized implementation of the speaker’s communicative intentions is achieved. This affects not only the external and internal structure of a presidential speech, but also the use of certain language resources. Thus, we imagine a strategy as an idealized vector that shapes presidents’ communication activities. It integrates a specifi c set of their discourses to a particular, pragmatic and intentional communication. As a result, it covers a number of genres and situationally and thematically determined varieties of speeches. This proves that a prerequisite for further study into a characteristic strategy in the orientation genre of presidential discourse is the most common, ultimate purpose, that is an idea (of which communicants may not be conscious) of some expected results to be achieved. The primary method used is the Cybernetic Method of Morphological Analysis of Complex Systems, based on the principle of movement from the abstract to the concrete, which enables to explore the expediency of providing the following algorithm of communicative strategy realization in the presidential addresses: strategy (a general matrix of communicative actions that determines some specifi c characteristics and features of texts in a particular genre) → tactic (achieving strategy dependent objectives concretized in the form of specifi c targeted instructions which can be found in communicative blocks of a specific speech event) → communicative move (verbal forms of tactical tasks) → language means (units of different language levels that provide an utterance with optimal informational and pragmatic potential).
