Abstract

In the article the main aspects of the study on verbs perfectivation in the Ukrainian language are revealed, the importance of verbs analysis while studying modern Ukrainian is investigated. The characteristics of thinking and intellectual work verbs perfectivation are defi ned. The lexical-semantic group of Ukrainian thinking and intellectual work verbs is distinguished and described. It was found out that these verbs can be combined with certain prefi xes to perform word building and grammatical functions. The group of thinking and intellectual work verbs express unfi nished actions; therefore, they tend to combine with prefi xes having limiting temporal meaning. However, the group of thinking and intellectual work verbs include the words with different semantic and stylistic characteristics. As a result, the perfectivation process of such verbs has some special features. Thinking and intellectual work verbs are different from other verbs by means of prefi xes, which have vast variety of meanings. These prefi xes can denote the result as something real, fabricated, fi ctional, but also as a plan or intention to do something in the mind’s eye, in thoughts. Prefix за- expresses the resulting meaning of the plan or intention to do something. The group of thinking and intellectual work verbs with prefi xes denoting special results include the verbs having quantitative meaning and expressing intense resulting mode of verbal action. The large amount of thinking perfective verbs stand out for having only the resulting meaning. One of the special features of perfective verbs denoting thinking and intellectual work is their ability to actively form imperfective aspect pairs. Therefore, unlike their prefi xless equivalents of imperfective aspect, these verbs are biaspectual. This is due to the dominant role of perfective verbs denoting special resulting meaning. The author arrived at conclusions that it is prefi xes that give the resulting meaning to the verbs denoting thinking and intellectual work. In modern Ukrainian the means of building the equivalents of perfective aspect verbs from imperfective ones have more potential than from denominative verbs.
